Not only does he claim Faustus' soul, but also, as the devil himself, he is ostensibly everyone's antagonist. Ultimately, though, the title of antagonist should probably go to Lucifer. The play is found to evoke a unique interest even among the modern plays for its dramatic quality. The play marks a clash between the values of the medieval world and the emerging humanism in Renaissance. He certainly acts as a bad influence on his friends and acquaintances (like his servant Wagner) and with petty villainy towards his enemies (like the knight at Charles V's court). Marlowe’s play Doctor Faustus is commended universally as a masterly specimen of the English tragedy.
